Genre: eLearning | Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Award winning VFX Supervisor and Technical Director Allan McKay, takes us into the world of Fluid Dynamics. Using Fluid Dynamics software Real Flow to cover many of the concepts of simulating fluids such as water, lava including more jellow and latex type of textures. Students will gain a true understanding of Real Flow, how it works and how to push Real Flow beyond its limits. By using industry techniques and approaches to create actual visual effects shots, students will learn how to optimize, speed up their simulations and utilize the simulated information in their 3D package of choice.
With a limited amount of seats, this workshop raises the bar on creating fluid simulation Visual Effects for feature films. ‘Mastering Realflow 2012 for Production' is centered around bringing users quickly up to speed with all of Realflow 2012's new features, as well as a general overview of how Realflow and fluids in general work. Each week we delve into high end subjects used in production, not only giving you a more advanced look at how to create specific visual effects shots, but also getting you up to speed with using them in actual productions.

During this 8 week workshop you will:

- Learn all of the major features of Realflow 2012
- Create large scale water simulations using Reaflow's Hybrido Solver to make massive detailed simulations.
- Learn to generate procedural splashes, and foam and other additional layers for your simulations.
- Rigid Body Dynamics, Fracturing, Retiming simulations
- Elastic Simulations and Soft Bodies, Real Wave and other cool Realflow features
- Exporting your simulations and rendering them in Maya & 3D Studio Max
- Take actual production shots from start to finish
- Massive floods, Objects shattering, Boats realistically moving through wakes and other cool effects!

Allan McKay will personally tutor all students as they work together on creating various effects shots over 2 months online. Helping mentor students and improve their work, offer advice when they get stuck, answering questions and helping them better themselves and improve their knowledge and techniques, as well helping artists goals of making themselves better candidates for finding employment at big FX studios, or helping already established FX Artists excel by stepping into higher roles within the workplace, such as lead and supervisor roles.

Master Fluid Dynamics and Large Scale Water Simulations!

Week 1: In our introductory week we go through general information about Realflow & water simulations, covering a lot of the key features of Realflow and conceptualizing on a lot of it's workflow process. Although our introductory week an ‘introductory week', it is still designed to jump in the deep end and get everyone up to speed fairly quickly, as well as covering a lot of key information that even more advanced FX Artists will probably want to familiarize themselves with.

After a crash course in fluids we run through designing an actual fluid simulation from the ground up, introducing both fluids as well as rigid body dynamics and fluid interaction into our shot - getting our objects to interact and be driven by the fluids and creating a realistic simulation. After which we then look at exporting the information into both Maya as well as 3D Studio Max and rendering these shots out in Mental Ray.

Week 2: This week we delve into some of Realflow's new features as well as taking a very traditional shot that everyone has seen before, and making it far more interesting and fun. We start out with a simulation of a wine glass, however this shot actually looks into creating a realistic simulation of a wine glass in mid air falling from a table - and utilizing some of Realflow 2012's new features we're able to have the wine glass dynamically break on impact with the ground as well as simulate the wine's interaction as it spills out across the floor. More interestingly, from here we utilize the new retiming features to speed ramp the simulated shot and everything in it - to slow down and break in slow motion upon impact. And then export all of the geometry and water information out of Realflow.

Week 3: This week we take a look at some of the other features of Realflow such as Realwave, elastics and other interesting subjects - to create realistic oceans, wakes, foot prints in mud or snow, deformable objects and even have objects tear apart based on tension and a lot of other really useful and interesting material!

Week 4: This week we take a crash course in Realflow's Hybrido! Going through a lot of the key features as well as ways to take full advantage of Hybrido in production, as well as optimizing simulations. We start with simulating a boat moving through an ocean as well as creating realistic waves splashing up against it, and exporting the Hybrido data out of Realflow.

Week 5: Taking what we learned from last week, we go a step further and begin to look at cool production shots familiar in many disaster films. Here we take the concept of a large city being flooded by a massive wave and creating a large scale simulation as the water washes through the streets - as well as generating foam and additional splashes, and extra detail into our sims, as well as displacement maps and other vital information.

Week 6:Raising the bar further, this week we continue with another hero shot this time from street POV of a large wave smashing through the city and washing everything in it's path away. As well as creating all of the additional splashes, displacement, foam and texture information to take out of Realflow and render in our selective 3D package.

Week 7: As our two part final lesson, we have a large scale water tower, as well as a simulated chain/wrecking ball smashing through the massive water tower completely destroying the water tower and allowing for large masses of water to decend out with all of the broken wood splinters. This week we focus primarily on all of the rigid body and rope simulations and other pieces we need to simulate first

Week 8: For our final week, we take our previous simulated scene and begin to populate it with fluids and get everything to interact. Once we have our initial simulation of large scale water and rigids working together, we look at adding additional water sims and splashes, and going a step further to make this as realistic and chaotic as we possibly can!

Bonus Content: All students not only will be mentored for two months and run through many high end exercises, but also receive additional print outs and PDFs and other course content - as well as a bonus Realflow DVD with over 10 hours of additional training for free!

This workshop although aimed at intermediate to advanced users, is still laid out in a fairly straight forward and easy to follow process. So as long as you pay attention and run through the process a few times, even most introductory users will be able to follow these exercises - whereas more advanced users will be able to apply this information right away to their production shots.

Students will need either Maya, 3D Studio Max, SoftImage, Houdini or a similar program.
