Pink Floyd is a British progressive and psychedelic rock band from London, England. Formed in 1965, it is considered a pioneer and a major representative of these musical styles. He is recognized for his soaring and experimental music, his philosophical and satirical texts, his concept albums and his original and elaborate concert performances. From its beginnings to today, the group has sold nearly 300 million albums worldwide. In the United States alone, sales of Pink Floyd albums are counted by the RIAA at 75 million copies. Initially fronted by guitarist Syd Barrett, the band had modest success in the mid-1960s, then became one of London's most popular underground psychedelic bands. However, Barrett's increasingly unstable behavior (apparently caused by too much LSD consumption), led the other members to replace him with David Gilmour, a childhood friend of Barrett's. Bassist Roger Waters gradually became the leader of the group, signing all the lyrics from 1972. Pink Floyd acquired worldwide fame the following year with The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), the third best-selling album of all time, behind AC/DC's Back in Black and Michael Jackson's Thriller.
