Richard Kinsella was born in Dundee, Scotland. At seventeen he joined the Merchant Navy as a deck cadet becoming a qualified Master Mariner ten years later. With the increasing responsibilities of a growing family he left the sea and worked ashore in the financial sector. To maintain his connection with the sea he obtained a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve. Fifteen years later he was recalled to the regular navy as a Lieutenant-Commander.
