It's always nice to receive a new CD from the long established duo Winter Wilson.
Based on their track record of producing great songs with tight harmonies and subtle instrumental support, this will be a treat for their followers all around the country.
After seeing them at the venue in Nottingham in January, I had heard a fair smattering of the new material to whet my appetite.
Based on hearing their previous realeases, I expected and got great songwriting from Dave and powerful vocals from Kip Winter.
The duo have been on the folk scene for a number of years and never fail to impress with their albums and live performances.
To me it's one of those CDs which grows on you, the more you listen. Dave Wilson has things to say, and the well crafted lyrics tell stories, make observation and comments, like a good song always should.
The first track 'Weary Traveller' starts with some tasty guitar playing by Dave and the vocal harmonies soon kick in with Kip Winter. For me, the outstanding track is 'I'd Rather Be Ashes Than Dust' which is brighter an livelier than most of the tracks on the album. I have included that particular track in the February edition of The Folk Show. Other reviewers and broadcasters have picked out the final track which is 'Austerity' as their favourite offering.
I must say that I found 'Ashes and Dust' a litle darker than previous releases and as I mentioned, it reveals more of the quality on a second and third listen for me. As usual the lyrics are well crafted by Dave Wilson and require the listener to sit back and listen to the sories that he weaves into the songs. 'To Hell With Monday Morning' is a great song too.
I hope you enjoy the track in the show and I would suggest that you seek out more examples on the web, then buy the CD.
