Kotova has a dense, rich, liquid tone, applied here to mostly slow, pretty, and often mournful music. Many of these pieces invite a cellist to go over the top with some histrionics. Kotova's Dark Blue and Reminiscence both memorialize her father, Ivan Kotov, a double-bass virtuoso who died when Kotova was a girl, and the deep trauma of this is as clear from the very "Russian" music as from Kotova's notes. She fortunately shows restraint; there is an element of reserve in her melancholy that results in a truly attractive, if narrowly focused, recital... [T]here is zip to the well-known Stravinsky and Falla ballet excerpts, and Kotova's own Catwalk suite in three movements, so named because, after leaving the Soviet Union and losing her state-owned cello, she turned to international modeling to afford an instrument to play on (newspaper articles about her on the Internet seem, predictably, to find this aspect of her biography mesmerizing), has a pop/dance element that is not without charm to go with the requisite archness and irony.
