Opinions vary over Wynton Marsalis' contributions to the field of jazz, but there is little controversy over his exceptional classical performances, which are well documented on this satisfying twofer from Sony. Covering a period from 1984 to 2003, this survey provides representative samples from Marsalis' best-selling classical and crossover albums, ranging from such early hit CDs as In Gabriel's Garden and the multi-tracked Baroque Music for Trumpets, to later successes On the Twentieth Century and In Full Swing. Few contest Marsalis' brilliance in the standard repertoire, and his pure tone, precise execution, and clean phrasing make the trumpet tunes of Clarke, Purcell, and Stanley utterly delightful. His virtuosity and phenomenal control in the trumpet concertos of Vivaldi, Leopold Mozart, Haydn, and Hummel are exemplary, and his idiomatic playing in modern pieces by Ravel, Jolivet, Bernstein, and Hovhaness shows his fantastic versatility in a variety of styles. Marsalis has also written his own award-winning music, but there are no selections here from Blood on the Fields or At the Octoroon Balls, two albums that demonstrated his ambition to create serious works that bridge the divide between classical and vernacular music. However, this set is concerned with Marsalis as a performer, not as a composer, and as an introductory compilation of his best recordings for Sony, it is an attractive package that should win many new fans.
