"Slower starts this fine set as it means to go on - alto and trumpet over a skittering drum pattern and then some useful piano work delineating a well-conceived melodic line. Throughout, the emphasis is on the individual sounds of each instrument, the quiet, often high-register alto of the leader set against the brighter clarity of trumpeter Alessi and, on just two tracks, the gritty tenor of Marc Mommaas. Drummer Nasheet Waits is on as good as form as ever, while piano and bass both make their mark.
Much of the material - all composed by leader Thuelund - is pensive and medium-paced to slow, the better to hear the individual contributions, although Reach kicks up a storm of shouting saxophones and Illuminate is driven by forceful repetitive single notes on piano and then alto. It's always a joy to hear the ingenuity of Alessi, but so too to get an introduction to leader Thuelund, whom I hope to hear more of in the years to come."
