This course is the next step for students who have experience with HTML/CSS and are looking to take their skills and web projects to the next level. Websites can be relatively static mediums: a simple portfolio; a site for a local coffee shop with hours, location, and menu; or an elementary school's faculty listing are all basic websites with hard-coded content.
This format works well for presenting an unchanging amount of content that is the same for every person who uses the website. Web applications, however, take websites to the next level. Think about your experience when you log-in to your online bank, social networks like Facebook, and online stores like Amazon. These are all robust applications operating off of extensive databases and offering a personalized experience to each individual user. Over the course of the semester we cover the knowledge and skills necessary to evolve simple static websites into dynamic, database driven web applications. Students learn how to use the popular LAMP framework (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP), in combination with javascript (+ Ajax), CSS, and HTML5 to develop their own robust online programs. Prerequisite: familiarity with HTML and CSS is assumed; experience with at least one other programming language is suggested.
